The Effect of a 2-Week Ketogenic Diet, versus a Carbohydrate-Based Diet, on Cognitive Performance, Mood and Subjective Sleepiness during 36 Hours of Extended Wakefulness in Military Personnel
The KD appeared to improve cognitive performance, mood and sleepiness during 36 h of extended wakefulness compared with the CHO-based diet. This suggests the KD could be considered for military operations when sleep deprivation is anticipated.

In summary, these results provide the first documentation of the metabolic adaptations associated with long-term con- sumption of a very low-carbohydrate/high-fat diet in highly trained keto-adapted ultra-endurance athletes. The enhanced ability to oxidize fat during exercise across a range of intensities is striking, as is the ability to maintain “normal” glycogen concentrations in the context of limited carbohydrate intake. Keto-adaptation provides an alternative to the supremacy of the high-carbohydrate paradigm for endurance athletes.

"We have demonstrated the metabolic effects of elevated circulating ketone bodies as a fuel and biological signal to create a unique physiological condition. Ketosis may alter substrate competition for respiration, while improving oxidative energy transduction under certain conditions, such as endurance exer-cise. Consequently, nutritional ketosis may help to unlock greater human metabolic potential."

Nutritional Ketosis Increases NAD+/NADH Ratio in Healthy Human Brain: An in Vivo Study by 31P-MRS

"The NAD+ requirement of the glycolytic and ketolytic pathways is illustrated in Figure 3. Glycolysis requires 4 NAD+ to make 2 Acetyl-CoA, while ketolysis consumes no NAD+ to make Acetyl-CoA from AcA, and only one NAD+ to convert BHB to AcA (6). This is to the best of our knowledge the first interventional study that shows that ketones can have a NAD+ sparing effect in healthy human brain."
